From the moment the wheels of Deion Sanders’ jet touched down in suburban Denver in December 2022, Colorado has been one of the most closely followed teams in all of college football.
A program that had faded into national irrelevance is now a subject of persistent interest. When a school hires one of the most talented and charismatic athletes in the history of American sports to lead its football team, it’s a happy byproduct.
After a disappointing 4-8 record in 2023, the Buffs are 4-1 and two wins from just their third bowl appearance since 2008. They feature two of the sport’s brightest stars in Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders, both of whom are widely considered to be top-10 picks in the 2025 NFL Draft.

The question now for Sanders and Colorado is whether they can avoid what happened to them last season, when the Buffs got off to a surprising 3-0 start and a national ranking only to unravel late, losing eight of their final nine games.
Whether history repeat itself is a question that will be answered over the next two months, as Colorado navigates its first season back in the Big 12.
Here’s a look at what Colorado faces the rest of the 2024 season, including when it will play next:

Colorado will not play during Week 6 of the college football season. The Buffaloes will instead enjoy their first of two byes.
Though Sanders and the Buffs certainly won’t argue with the rest, it comes at a time in which they’ve been hot, winning three consecutive games following a blowout loss against Nebraska. They capped that run off last Saturday with perhaps their most impressive victory yet, a 48-21 win at UCF.
Colorado’s schedule will get noticeably more difficult coming out of the break. On Oct. 12, it will host No. 20 Kansas State before traveling the following week to face a 3-1 Arizona team that began the season ranked in the top 25 of the US LBM Coaches Poll.
Though other factors, like an improved defense, will help dictate their success, the Buffs are likely to get as far as their top-end stars will take them. Hunter is a two-way phenomenon and one of the frontrunners for the Heisman Trophy, with a team-high 46 catches for 561 yards and six touchdowns on offense and two interceptions on defense. Shedeur Sanders, the youngest of Deion Sanders’ two sons on the team, has thrown for 1,630 yards, 14 touchdowns and just three interceptions while completing 70.1% of his passes.
