PEORIA (25News Now) – There’s plenty to do on Peoria’s Riverfront, but on Tuesday there was something that’s rarely seen there.
Choose Greater Peoria teamed up with the Ledgestone Open to bring disc golf to the Riverfront.
Organizers set up an 18-hole disc golf course outside the Riverfront Museum and the Caterpillar Visitors Center. The course was designed to be played in about an hour with a $5 registration fee. Players received a custom-designed soft blend disc to use for the day. There was a touch of local culture too for this emerging sport.
“I think the greatest thing about this big kickoff is that it’s really bringing together people that are coming into town to visit for the event. So, it is really bringing them together in a way that they can experience the hobby or the sport that they love so much and really [give] the chance for us to show off the community of Peoria,” said Melissa Hucal, who’s one of the organizers.
The 14th annual Ledgestone Open – the world’s largest disc golf tournament – runs Aug. 1 through Aug. 4 at 15 different courses in the area.
Participants in Tuesday’s kickoff had the chance to win VIP tickets to the event.
