DirecTV has launched a new sports streaming package called called MySports beta. The streaming service provides numerous sports channels for cheaper monthly payments than YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV and fuboTV.
Is it worth your time to switch over to MySports beta? We did all the work to find all the positives and negatives for the new sports streaming service and how it stacks up to the others.
If you buy it before Feb. 28, MySports beta will cost $49.99 a month for the first three months. If you buy MySports beta after Feb. 28, it’ll be the original price of $69.99 a month.
For comparison, YouTube TV’s base plan is $72.99 for the first six months then jumps up to $82.99. Hulu + Live TV plans start at $81.99 while fuboTV offers $5 off the first month then becomes $79.99 a month.
From a cost perspective, MySports beta has its competitors beat. But there’s a reason for that.
Yes, MySports beta offers a five-day free trial. YouTube TV, fuboTV and Hulu + Live Sports all offer free trials as well.
Almost all sports will be easily accessible on MySports beta. The streaming service has most of the available stations to regularly watch the NBA, NHL, MLB, college basketball and college football. It’ll also have limited NFL game coverage from ESPN and the FOX and NBC in select markets.
There’s a large selection of sports channels (or channels that will include sports) in the MySports beta plan. All the ESPN channels, ACC Network, Big 10 Network, SEC Network, NFL Network, MLB Network, NHL Network, NBA TV, Golf Channel, FS1, FS2, TBS and TNT are the highlight of the package, though there’s even more available.
ESPN hosts Monday Night Football along with some NFL playoff games, but that’s the only guaranteed platform that offers NFL games in the subscription package. FOX and NBC host games throughout the season and playoffs, but both are only available in limited markets in the MySports beta plan. CBS is another massive broadcaster for the NFL, and that is the biggest omission on this plan.
DirecTV chief marketing officer Vince Torres told Bloomberg that DirecTV “is in early discussions with CBS about getting its content” to use on MySports beta.
CBS broadcasts multiple NFL games every week, including playoff games. No CBS on this package also means you’ll have limited access to “March Madness” and The Masters, two of the biggest sporting events every year.
YouTube TV, DirecTV Stream and fuboTV all have CBS. Yes, they’re more expensive, but CBS is very important for sports, specifically the NFL and even some college football games on Saturdays. Not to mention many of the PGA Tour’s biggest events are broadcasted on CBS.
For soccer fans, the UEFA Champions League is exclusively on Paramount+ and CBS Sports Network, neither of which are on the plan. The English Premier League is almost exclusively broadcasted on Peacock, with the exception of about one game a week broadcasting on USA Network. USA Network does come in the MySports beta plan, so you’d be able to watch some of the EPL, though only a small fraction.
Along with all the sports channel options, this streaming package offers some non-sports options as well. CNN, FOX News, MSNBC, CNBC and FOX Business Network are all included in the package. Of course TNT, TBS, truTV and USA Network all show sports games, TV shows and movies.
For what will eventually be $70 a month, MySports beta is worth the price as long as you don’t mind missing out on some NFL football games, “March Madness”, and two of the most-followed soccer leagues in the world. It’s great for coverage of the NBA, NHL and MLB, so if those sports are the focus then this is a great plan.
Even if the NFL and soccer are high on your priority list, a Paramount+ (CBS’s streaming service) subscription is essentially $5 a month. That would take your monthly streaming list to $75 a month, or $5 a month less than fuboTV, which offers many of the same channels along with more general channels. The big difference between fuboTV’s base package and MySports beta is that the latter offers MLB Network, NHL Network, NBA TV, TBS, TNT and truTV. It all comes down to preference.
