Diego Schwartzman became the victim of theft while at a recent practice session.
The Argentine tennis star returned to his car to find “everything stolen” after his windows were smashed in.
It’s not the first time the former world No. 8’s possessions have been stolen. His hotel room was burgled during the 2022 Eastbourne International.
Schwartzman took to Instagram to disclose that his car had been broken into while he was at a training session. The 32-year-old shared two photos showing the shattered glass inside his Jeep after one of the windows was smashed in.
“Get out of the court and everything stolen,” he wrote in Spanish, adding an Argentine flag and a broken-heart emoji in his second post.
The four-time title winner has been practising ahead of his retirement. Schwartzman will end his career on home soil at next year’s Argentina Open.
He announced the news back in May and has since been enjoying something of a farewell tour. The 32-year-old was honoured with a retirement ceremony during his latest appearance at the US Open where he qualified for the main draw but lost to Gael Monfils.
The former world No. 8 still has a memento from his latest Grand Slam appearance. In the photos of Schwartzman’s car, his US Open tumbler is visible in the cup holder.
It’s unfortunately not the first time Schwartzman has been the victim of a theft. He was one of two tennis players affected by a hotel burglary during the ATP 250 event in Eastbourne two years ago.
Spain’s Pedro Martinez had a Rolex stolen from his room and later admitted the incident affected his performance on the court. Schwartzman also lost his opening match at the tournament after the theft.
“Yes, it was difficult. I had a watch stolen from my room yesterday and Schwartzman had some items also stolen from his room,” Martinez said at the time.
“I had a bad night, that’s the truth. I didn’t sleep. Today was difficult to prepare [for] the match but I just tried to focus on playing.
“When I arrived in the room I realised that my watch wasn’t there. I searched throughout the room, it was not there and when I went to reception to communicate to the people, then Diego came 15 minutes after, telling the same.”
Sussex Police confirmed the incidents in a statement. “We can confirm we received reports of two separate burglaries at the Hydro Hotel in Mount Road, Eastbourne, on Monday 20 June,” it read.
“A number of high value items including watches and bags were stolen, along with cash and some personal items. The incidents are being investigated and we have no further information at this time.”
