The countdown to the British Classics in 2025 gets underway this weekend, as a key trial is staged at Newmarket. City of Troy became the latest winner of the Dewhurst Stakes to win a Classic after storming to success in the Newmarket Group One in 2023.

A fascinating renewal of the Dewhurst Stakes is set for this weekend, with the field of two-year-oldâs competing over seven furlongs on the Rowley Mile at Newmarket.
Aidan OâBrien has dominated the recent editions of the race, winning five times since 2015. He holds three chances this weekend, which includes the current market leader- The Lion In Winter.
As expected, Ryan Moore takes the ride on the runner, who was last seen winning over seven furlongs to score impressively in the G3 Acomb Stakes. That form was subsequently boosted after Wimbledon Hawkeyeâs win over a mile in the G2 Royal Lodge last month.

Charlie Appleby has an impressive record in the Dewhurst, winning two of the last five editions. Shadow of Light is a leading contender based on the odds after beating the highly-progressive Whistlejacket over six furlongs at Newmarket in the G1 Middle Park last month.
However, Ancient Truth is the unbeaten runner from the Godolphin stable. The two-year-old has won two from two over seven furlongs, which included an impressive showing when beating re-appearing rival Seagulls Eleven by over a length in the G2 Superlative Stakes.
The top three in the betting look to be the class of the field. But, the preference is for The Lion In Winter, who has looked potentially high class on all career starts to this point, with further improvement still to come.
