The Detroit Lions will have a new long snapper in 2024. According to Dave Birkett, the Lions are cutting incumbent snapper Scott Daly and going with undrafted rookie long snapper Hogan Hatten.
Daly has been the Lions’ snapper for the last three seasons, unseating Lions legend Don Muhlbach in 2021. Muhlbach has since retired as a player and become the Lions’ special assistant of football operations.
While Daly has held the long snapper position for three seasons, the Lions constantly gave him competition in training camp. Last year, he beat out veteran Jake McQuaide. Although McQuaide took back over midway through the season after Daly suffered a season-ending injury.
The potential of Hatten was apparently too much for Daly this year.
Back in 2022, Hatten moved from linebacker to long snapper for the University of Idaho. His most intriguing quality is his outstanding athleticism. He produced a 9.89 Relative Athletic. Score in his pre-draft testing:
That athleticism certainly showed up during the Lions’ preseason games. Several times over the past month, he was one of the first defenders down the field for Detroit’s punt coverage team. In fact, he produced two tackles as well—playing part-time at linebacker in Detroit’s opening preseason game against the New York Giants.
Hatten is just 23 years old, so hopefully the Lions have their long snapper for the next decade or two.
With Hatten making the 53-man roster as an undrafted rookie, a UDFA has now made the Lions’ initial roster for 15 years in a row.
