Trey McKenney won this weekend’s showdown against fellow Michigan Mr. Basketball finalist Lance Stone.
McKenney scored 26 points, including some important baskets at the end of regulation and overtime, as his Detroit Renaissance team beat Orchard Lake St. Mary’s, 76-73.
Stone played well, too, with 26 points including seven straight points near the end of the game. However, he also turned the ball over with a late backcourt violation and missed two free throws with his team down 74-73 with less than 10 seconds left.
McKenney was last year’s Detroit High School Sports Awards Boys Basketball Player of the Year. He is a Michigan Mr. Basketball finalist this year along with Stone, U-D Jesuit’s Leroy Blyden and Ann Arbor Huron’s Macari Moore.
McKenney, a University of Michigan recruit and the No. 17 recruit in the nation according to the USA TODAY 25 in ’25 recruiting rankings, might have gained a bit of ground on Stone with the win, but not much as both players played well.
The 2024-25 Detroit High School Sports Awards are June 16 at The Fillmore Detroit. The show is produced with the support of Gift of Life Michigan, which is also the ticket sponsor, allowing everyone to attend the show for free. Tickets can be obtained here.
