No. 10 seed Lorenzo Sonego will face No. 11 seed Alex Michelsen in the final of the Winston-Salem Open after the two men won their semifinals in straight sets Friday in North Carolina.
Sonego defeated Belgium’s David Goffin 6-3, 6-2 in the first match of the day. The Italian won 37 of 51 total service points (72.5 percent), putting up 18 winners with 11 unforced errors while Goffin hit just 10 winners and committed 12 unforced errors.
It marks Sonego’s first trip to a tournament final in almost two years. His last final, and title, came in September 2022 at the Moselle Open in France.
Michelsen led Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta 7-6 (5), 2-1 when Carreno Busta retired.
Michelsen, who turns 20 on Sunday, reached his second final of the summer as he searches for his first career title. The California native lost to countryman Marcos Giron last month in the Hall of Fame Open final in Newport, R.I.
