Iga Swiatek‘s doping case has taken an interesting turn. Right after the ITIA announced her suspension, the Polish WTA star found herself in the pool of severe controversy, which prompted her to make a heartfelt confession on social media. While some within the tennis fraternity questioned her integrity in the sport, the one responsible for her ordeal came forward with an apology throwing new and even more intriguing details about the case into the discussion.
The former WTA number one tested positive for Trimetazidine, a banned substance, resulting in a suspension by the ITIA from September 12 to October 4. Despite failing the test, the Polish player claimed her innocence, stating she had no idea how the substance entered her body. Later investigations revealed that the contamination came from contaminated melatonin she took to get relief from jet lag. Although she technically violated the sport’s rules, her punishment was reduced because it was found she didn’t do it intentionally. Following the news, the introverted Polish player addressed her followers on social media, appearing visibly impacted and depressed by the adversity.
In response to Swiatek’s social media post, the contaminated melatonin manufacturing company, LEK-AM issued a public apology. “We are saddened by the situation that has occurred to the best tennis player in the world. We are deeply touched by Mrs. Iga Swiatek’s statement on November 28, 2024, not only as employees of the pharmaceutical company but also as sports fans.” the company stated. Their message reflected a deep regret and embarrassment for jeopardizing a talented athlete’s career.

The company further confirmed their full cooperation with the Polish WTA star to help clear her name. Despite not being contacted by the ITIA, the company was communicated by a UK-based law firm. However, they refrained from disclosing specific information, citing their obligation under Article 36(g) of the Pharmaceutical Law Act, Official Gazette 2024.686. Despite these legal constraints, their statement conveyed a genuine willingness to assist the athlete.

In their apology statement, LEK-AM revealed another interesting information. They confirmed the traces of TMZ found in the melatonin are below the permissible standard, which makes the drug meet “all the high standards.” We are sorry that the incident involved the drug Melatonina LEK-AM 1 mg – especially since our drug has enjoyed the recognition and trust of doctors and patients, including professional athletes, for many years. We meet all the highest standards of drug production. We follow all procedures related to the production of medicines,” they said. Their claim sheds light on how the contaminated melatonin has TMZ in potion significantly below the permissible amount. “Trace amounts of contamination detected in the tested drug packages are significantly below the permissible standard, which means that they do not pose any threat to the health and life of patients,” the company concluded.
Iga Swiatek’s doping case has alarmed the fraternity questioning the leading athletes’ integrity and dedication towards the sport. However, after Swiatek’s melatonin manufacturing company revealed their side of the story, it seems the criticizers will tone down a bit. Nevertheless, the situation surely impacted the Polish star’s career and mental health dragging her into controversy. Now it is hoped that she will recover from this phase and offer brilliant performance in the coming season.
