Portnoy was born on March 22, 1977, in Swampscott, Massachusetts, and played baseball as a child, cultivating a lifelong love of sports. He attended the University of Michigan, graduating in 1999 with a bachelor’s degree in education, a Michigan Daily article said.
According to Barstool Sports documentary about Portnoy, he founded Barstool Sports in 2004 and has been running it ever since.
Barstool Sports grew to be a media company that garnered nationwide attention. According to the website Social Blade, the Barstool Sports Youtube channel has accumulated almost a billion views on their videos.
