Daniil Medvedev announced huge news after fans questioned why he wasn’t at the Australian Open.
The world No. 5 did not enter any warm-up tournaments in Australia and is yet to arrive in Melbourne to begin training for the first Major of the year.
It left his supporters joking that he was ‘missing’ but Medvedev had good reason – he recently welcomed his second child with his wife, Daria.
Medvedev announced the news on social media on Tuesday afternoon. The 28-year-old shared a photo of himself holding his new baby, sitting next to his older daughter Alisa.
“Happy 2025,” he wrote, adding a heart emoji. Fellow players and athletes flocked to the comments to send their love to the Medvedev family.
“Congraulations to you guys. What a happiness. Dasha is a smart girl,” Elina Vesnina wrote. Holger Rune and Garbine Muguruza congratulated him while David De Gea left a heart-eye emoji.
Medvedev’s announcement comes after fans started to raise concerns over his absence in Australia with the first Grand Slam tournament of the season less than a week away.
Other players who also chose not to play warm-up tournaments like Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner have already landed in Australia and started practising at Melbourne Park.
Medvedev has not been seen on-site and his name has continously been left off of the practice schedules. Tennis fans had previously been left wondering why Medvedev was nowhere to be seen.
“Daniil Medvedev: – Not playing a warmup tournament – Not playing an exhibition for opening week – Not there yet 5 days before AO starts What are we even doing here, seriously? Put up the missing person flyers atp,” @vronsky_anna wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter).
@Osakattack posted: “on a serious note where the hell is medvedev? a week before AO & he’s nowhere to be seen” and @idgafabttennis mocked up a missing person poster with a photo of the former world No. 1.
Hours before Medvedev announced the birth of his second child, @Enna10is tweeted: “Where are you Daniil? Who are you Daniil? What are you Daniil? When are you Daniil? Why are you Daniil? How are you Daniil?”
But he has finally given a very valid explanation for his absence.
It’s not known when Medvedev will travel to Melbourne for the Australian Open, which gets underway on Sunday. In his announcement post on Instagram, he tagged Nice in France as his location.
The world No. 5 has finished as the runner-up three times, including last year, when he blew a two-set lead over Jannik Sinner.
The birth of his second child could be a good omen. When Medvedev and his wife Daria welcomed their first child in October 2022, he returned to action and won his first tournament back, the Vienna Open.
