Experiential entertainment company Cosm announced Friday that its fourth “shared reality” sports viewing center will open in downtown Detroit. While the construction timeline has not been finalized, the company is aiming to debut the venue in 2026.
Cosm currently has locations in Dallas and Los Angeles, with a third in Atlanta on the way. Each spot features massive, curved screens that create immersive spectator opportunities, mixing movie theater and sports bar elements. The NFL, NBA, UFC and a number of media organizations have signed deals to broadcast their live content on the innovative screens. Hollywood Park’s 150-foot screen hosted multiple sold out World Series events.
Cosm Detroit will open as part of a revitalization effort spurred by real estate firm Bedrock, which was founded by Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert, who also participated in Cosm’s most recent funding round. In April, the area hosted NFL Draft celebrations that drew nearly 800,000 fans over three days.
“We always had Detroit on the map as a place we want to go, because of just the fandom there, the passion, four major professional sports teams, lots of universities,” Cosm CEO Jeb Terry said in an interview. “And getting to know Gilbert and his group really made us able to make it venue four rather than venue 10.”
While Cosm’s signature aspects will be replicated in each location, the company is also aiming to endow each new location with a bit of local flair, including regional staffing and food items. Terry also said that the group continues refining the concept, making small tweaks to each new design.
The Detroit venue is being developed with locally based architecture firm Rossetti. When sports aren’t on, Cosm has a library of recorded programming to air as well.
