Schenectady, NY (WRGB) — A charity golf tournament was held Friday at Schenectady Municipal Golf Course to honor two local soldiers who were killed in a helicopter crash earlier this year in Texas.
John Grassia III of Rotterdam and Casey Frankoski of Rensselaer died while serving in the military. The event, organized by the John M. Grassia Foundation, brought together family, friends, and community members to remember their sacrifice and raise funds for military and law enforcement families in need.
“They say when you join the army, you sign a blank check, and they gave their lives for this country,” said Jim Frankoski, the father of Casey Frankoski, one of two national guard officers from the Capital Region who was tragically killed in the helicopter crash.
Six months after the crash, their families continue to feel the community’s support. The tournament featured food, a live raffle, and a signed Josh Allen jersey. All proceeds will benefit families facing similar tragedies.
“There was an outpouring of support when my brother passed, and we want to do the same for other families who suffer this kind of loss,”Gina McDermott, Grassia’s sister shared.
“When he was in Texas, he’d send us videos of Texas of him working on his golf game.” said Krista Rotondi, Grassia’s other sister.
The foundation was created by the Grassia family to keep John’s legacy alive, with golf being a fitting choice for the fundraiser.
“He loved to golf with his friends, so it felt natural to start his foundation with this tournament,” McDermott added.
Grassia’s uncle, Rick Poltorak, also honored his nephew by launching a cigar business in his name.
“I made this cigar box with his picture… it’s unbelievable how much support we’ve gotten today,” Poltorak said.
The father’s of Grassia and Frankoski have also honored their sons by getting tattoos in their memory.
“I always said I’d get a tattoo if it had meaning, and this certainly does. I have their signatures around the patch,” Frankoski said.
For family and friends, the tournament is a way to celebrate the lives of their loved ones and keep their memories alive.
