Jimmy Ellis, a 39-year-old oil and gas landman, was the talk of the golf world after two days of stroke play at the U.S. Amateur where he surprised everyone—including himself—by earning medalist honors. Unfortunately for him, once the tournament switched to match play, none of that mattered.
All 64 golfers advancing at Hazeltine started from scratch on Wednesday and it was No. 64, Ethan Fang, who ended Ellis’ Cinderella run. He also inadvertently daggered Jimmy on the way out.
Fang will be a sophomore at Oklahoma State this year after transferring from Cal. And after his two-up victory over Ellis, he had a pretty funny exchange with reporters about their obvious age gap.
Q. You’re playing a guy who’s 39 years old. I don’t know how old you are.
Q. So he’s 20 years your senior. Like playing your dad?
ETHAN FANG: It was definitely different. I never played someone who was so old in a tournament before. It was fun. Didn’t really expect much. Just went out there and had fun.
I never played someone who was SO OLD in a tournament before. Damn, Ethan, that’s cold.
OK, so we added a bit of emphasis on those two words. We don’t think Ethan meant anything by it, of course, but as a fellow member of the SO OLD club, it caught my attention. Watch what you say around your elders, young man!
Anyway, Ethan should feel much more comfortable in his Round-of-32 match on Thursday when he plays Zach Adams, a junior at South Carolina. There will be plenty of time between shots to talk about video games or whatever college kids are into these days.
