With Week 12 behind us, the eagerly anticipated release of the third top-25 rankings by the College Football Playoff selection committee is just around the corner. This third release will be a pivotal moment, offering valuable insights into which teams are in contention for the national championship as the season inches to the end.
The 13-member selection committee for the College Football Playoff plays a crucial role in the ranking process. They meticulously assess all the games played up until now, considering factors such as strength of schedule, performance, and game results. As of now, the odds are in favor of the Ohio State Buckeyes at +300, despite their one loss so far this season. The undefeated Oregon Ducks, led by Heisman hopeful Dillon Gabriel, is a close second in the race for the national title at +350.

In the 2024-25 season, 12 teams will qualify for the new College Football Playoff format, a significant change from the four teams selected for the playoff field over the past decade.
The new 12-team College Football Playoff will feature five conference champions, with the top four automatically securing the top four bids. The highest-ranked four teams will receive a first-round bye and will advance directly to the quarterfinals. The remaining eight ranked teams will compete for spots in the 5-12 bracket and will play their games on the home field of the higher-ranked team.
