The Florida Swing tees off the March PGA Tour schedule with the Cognizant Classic in the Palm Beaches – 85 miles north of Miami. The first of four events in the Sunshine State begins Feb. 27 with the winner crowned March 2. Leading golfers odds and picks from the 144-player field includes 16 of the top 50 players in the Official World Golf Rankings.
Tom and George Fazio designed the course in 1981, and Jack Nicklaus’ most recent redesign of the course was in 2014 with the greens modified in 2019. Bermuda fairways and larger than average bermuda greens are in play, along with plenty of water hazards on 15 holes. Strokes Gained Approach is a key stat again at the Champion Course, especially from 125-200 yards. Players have hit Greens in Regulation at the course near a 61% rate since 2019 – which is below the Tour average (65-66%).
The Champion Course places a premium on Total Driving, and rewards players who consistently hit fairways off the tee. Tricky South Florida winds can constantly cause havoc as players navigate the tighter landing areas off the tee and seemingly tranquil water penalty areas throughout the course. That includes at The Bear Trap closing holes at 15, 16 and 17 – the fourth toughest three-hole stretch on the PGA Tour.
