Coco Gauff has suggested a brand new tennis tournament following the dominance of American women’s tennis.
There are currently four women from the United States in the WTA Tour’s top 10 during what is a successful period for the country’s players.
Madison Keys became the fourth player from America to enter this group following her epic run to the Australian Open title.
The 29-year has re-entered the top 10 for the first time since 2023 and she joined her compatriots of Gauff, Jessica Pegula and Emma Navarro in the elite group.
Coco Gauff leads the way for the American women as she sits at three in the WTA Tour rankings.
She is followed by Pegula who is ranked at six, and Keys is directly behind at number seven, while Navarro is currently the ninth best player in the world.
Following the consistency she and her compatriots have shown, Gauff has called for a women’s edition of the Laver Cup.
In the men’s edition, a selection of players from Europe go head-to-head in a series of singles and doubles matches against a group of players from the rest of the world over three days.
Gauff has suggested the women do the same, but rather just the USA taking on a team from the rest of the world.
She took to Instagram and replied to a post acknowledging that four American women are now in the top 10. “USA vs World Laver Cup?” she asked.
The Laver Cup was established by Roger Federer and his agent Tony Godsick in 2017.
They alternate between hosting the tournament in Europe and North America and always aim to select the best players available to represent both teams.
Their main aim is ensuring it is a product that the fans want to come and watch, and Federer mentioned the possibility of a women’s Laver Cup in the future.
“You have options to say maybe we will do two years in Berlin or three years, instead of jumping from one to the next,” Federer told Bloomberg TV’s YouTube channel in September. “I don’t know, could we play Grand Slam venues?
“Could there be a Laver Cup for women as well? But the concern at the moment is to make sure we have a really good product with the Laver Cup.”
