Injury may have sidelined Portland Trail Blazers rookie center Donovan Clingan, but it hasn’t bumped him from the rookie shot-blocking leaderboard.
Through all games played through December 3, Clingan leads all rookies in blocks per game (2.2) and total blocks (37), despite Clingan being 19th in total minutes among all rookies.
His shot-blocking prowess was noticed by the NBA’s social media team:
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Clingan also leads all rookies with more than 10 games of service in blocks per 100 possessions (5.9).
And he does more than block shots! Clingan also leads all rookies who have played at least 10 games in rebounds per 100 possessions (18.2), and both contested defensive rebound percentage (43.3%) and contested offensive rebound percentage at a staggering 83.3%.
His absence has been noticed by both the team and the stats: the Blazers had a 112.3 defensive rating before Clingan’s Nov. 23 injury, 16th in the NBA. Since he’s been out, Portland’s defensive rating has been dead last at 121.3.
Clingan has been ruled out for the foreseeable future with a grade 2 MCL sprain in his left knee, and is scheduled to be reevaluated on Tue. Dec. 10, two weeks from the injury announcement.
