SHARON, Pa. — The Golden Eagles women’s golf team finished atop the team leaderboard in a tournament for the first time since 2014, with Clarion winning the Thiel Fall Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

Clarion shot a team score of 344, putting them two strokes ahead of second-place Washington & Jefferson’s 346. The event was played at Avalon at Buhl GCS.

Clarion’s top finisher was newcomer Kennady Norton, who shot an 83 to finish second overall. The transfer from Newberry College carded two birdies on the day, including a four on the par-five 10th hole and a three on the par-four 13th hole. She went just three over par on the back nine, putting up a 38th that was tied for the best in the field in that stretch.

Just behind Norton was Hannah Smith, who finished tied for third overall with a score of 84. Smith had the only other birdie of the day for the Golden Eagles, putting up a two on the par-three 16th hole. McKayla Kerle was just a stroke behind Smith, tying for fifth place with a score of 85. Kerle tied for the best front-nine score in the entire field, shooting a 39.

Hailee Liptak rounded out the top-four for the Golden Eagles, contributing a 92 to the team score. Liptak started out strong, shooting a 42 on the front nine. McLain Alt was fifth on the team, shooting a 102 on Saturday.

The team victory was Clarion’s first since April 14, 2014 at the Grove City Invitational.
