MERIDA, MEXICO — Charleston’s Emma Navarro dominated unseeded Emiliana Arango of Colombia to win her first WTA Tour event this season, a rare 6-0, 6-0 victory at the Merida Open Akron.
Navarro, ranked No. 10 in the world coming into the tournament, became just the fifth player this century to win a final by that score.
According to the WTA Tour, the Ashley Hall graduate is the first player to win a WTA final 6-0, 6-0 since Iga Swiatek defeated Karolina Pliskova by that scoreline in the 2021 Rome final.
The only other finals to go 6-0, 6-0 since 2000 are: 2006 Quebec City (Marion Bartoli over Olga Puchkova), 2013 Sydney (Agnieszka Radwanska over Dominika Cibulkova) and 2016 Bucharest (Simona Halep over Anastasija Sevastova).
Arango is ranked 133rd in the world but will climb into the top 100 after reaching her first final. The two had never played before.
The championship was the second of Navarro’s career; she won the Hobart International last year.
