The plans for the future Alabama basketball facility have been modified.

The physical properties committee for the University of Alabama System Board of Trustees met Thursday in Birmingham and voted to authorize a modification to plans for the new basketball facility, which is in the process of being built next to Coleman Coliseum. The full board of trustees will meet Friday to officially approve the modification.

The modification: a courtyard for the men’s players, and a separate courtyard on the other side of the building for women’s players. These will be used as gathering areas for players as well as for recruiting purposes.

The additions will cost about $500,000, which will be paid from the Crimson Standard capital initiative. The project originally had a price tag of $58.67 million, with about $56.95 million for the upgrades. With the additions of the courtyards, the overall price tag will increase to $59.18 million.

The revision approved Thursday was to Stage III. The project also received Stage IV approval this past November.

The new basketball facility is expected to be completed by 2026.

The facility, expected to be about 48,883 gross square feet, will be for men’s basketball training and development. The new gym will be connected to the current men’s practice facility.

The women‘s team will take over the facility that Nate Oats’ team uses now once the new facility is completed.

“The practice gym is the coach’s classroom,” Alabama athletics director Greg Byrne told The Tuscaloosa News in June. “It’s where they teach and they develop. We’re doing this right now to take a very significant step for our basketball programs and then allowing us to navigate the waters that we’re in in college athletics right now. Then realizing the arena still has to be addressed.”

Alabama men’s basketball is in the middle of its bye week as it chases another SEC title. The Crimson Tide sits one game behind Auburn, ranked No. 1 in the country. The Tigers are undefeated in conference play. Alabama has one conference loss to Ole Miss in January.

The Crimson Tide’s next game will be against Arkansas on Saturday (7:30 p.m., ESPN) in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
