Blake Forrest (So., Maple Grove) is next for the team, with four round one birdies for 17th overall (74). Chris Gutuza (Jr., Johannesburg, South Africa), following his first collegiate tournament win the weekend before, shot a 76 with three birdies in round one. Carlson’s round one 70 certainly helped the Gustie “B” team’s standing, as the junior carded five birdies, including a two-shot birdie on hole four. Aradheea Gawade (Fy., Mumbai, India) is in 29th, sharing the spot with Gutuza with four birdies for a 76. Tommy Hiniker (5th, Edina) is one shot behind Gawade and Gutuza, tied for 38th overall. “The guys were hanging in there very well through the first 14 holes,” said Assistant Coach Randall Stuckey ’83, “then we didn’t finish going 13 over par the last four holes. We need to come out tomorrow playing one shot and one hole at a time and not getting too far ahead of ourselves. It’s a very strong tournament field and we’re still in a good spot to make a move tomorrow and Monday.”
The Gusties tee off at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow at the Links at the Links at Northfork in Ramsey.
