Tennis bid farewell to one of its longest serving players at the Argentina Open.
Several of the game’s top players brought their career to an end in 2024 such as Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray.
Diego Schwartzman announced in advance that he would retire after playing at his home tournament for the final time.
After losing in the second round to Pedro Martinez, he bid farewell to professional tennis after being in the game for 15 years.
Schwartzman claimed his first main draw win since 2023 by defeating Nicolas Jarry at the Argentina Open.
But Martinez was one step too far, as the Spaniard defeated the 32-year-old for the loss of just four games to reach the quarter-finals.
This brought Schwartzman’s career to an emotional end and the crowd gave him a standing ovation as he bid farewell.
The likes of Carlos Alcaraz send tributes to the former top 10 player as the 21-year-old wrote: “You’re too big little one,” before Dallas Open winner Denis Shapovalov simply said: “Vamoosss.” Schwartzman then responded to Alcaraz: “Thank you, nice memories of these years shared. The best is yet to come.”
They entered the comments of Schwartzman’s instagram post, where he uploaded a photo beaming with pride and drinking a glass of champagne.
The caption read: “Tennis I will always love you!!! Officially retired. Thanks @roldanba for letting me celebrate for a while.”
One player who recently hung up his racket after an illustrious career is Rafael Nadal.
The 22-time Grand Slam champion retired from tennis in November 2024, following Spain’s defeat to The Netherlands in the Davis Cup finals.
Nadal took to Instagram to share a series of photos with Schwartzman and pay tribute to him after the Argentine joined him in the retirement club.
“Congrats @dieschwartzman on your great career!,” Nadal wrote. “You’ve been a great example of fighting and overcoming and I’m glad we shared so many moments on the circuit. Enjoy your next stage!”
Schwartzman took to the comments and replied: “Thank you for teaching me and teaching tennis so many values.
“You are greater than words can express. It was incredible to have shared so many moments and not to talk about winning you once.”
