Wheeling, W. Va. – The Wheeling University Men’s Golf team wrapped up their third straight Mountain East Conference (MEC) golf invite this past week at the West Liberty Invitational. It was a career-best performance for Men’s Golfer Robin Duzmann, and he would be awarded for his efforts by the conference. On Wednesday, the sophomore was named the MEC’s Men’s Golfer of the Week for the first time in his career.
Across the two-day event, Duzmann would finish second overall and led the way among his fellow MEC competitors. He shot a career-best 209 across the two days of competition, battling through a day one rain delay to continue his strong play. He shot 70 or better in each of the three rounds and set his new single-round career best in the second round when he shot 69. Duzmann has been one of the Cardinal’s leading golfers throughout the season, being one of the Cardinal’s top two golfers in each of the nine rounds played this season. The second place finish as not only Duzmann’s first top five finish of his career, but is his highest individual finish in any collegiate tournament. He has emerged as a leader for the young Cardinal’s team and looks to keep his success going as he prepares for the MEC Championships.
After each of the first two rounds of play, Duzmann would find himself tied for first with IUP’s Alex Swinerton. The two shot identical 70’s and 69’s in the first two rounds and it would take the final 18 holes to decide the winner. After Bogeying on the first hole of the day, Duzmann came back to even his score with a birdie on hole two. He would add five more pars and another birdie on the front nine and finished even with a 35. He had a one stroke advantage over Swinerton entering the final nine holes. Duzmann would add seven more pars on the back nine and added a birdie on hole 17. He would add a par on the back nine, but Swinerton would do one stroke better as Duzmann finished second overall. It was the highest finish for a Cardinal golfer since the 2022 season as Duzmann continues his strong sophomore campaign.
Robin Duzmann is the fifth Wheeling University student-athlete to earn Conference Player of the Week honors this season and the fourth this week. He is the first Wheeling Men’s Golfer to win the award since MJ Darmawan on March 20th, 2024, and he is the second ever Men’s Golfer to win the honors. He joins Wheeling Volleyball’s Riley Kindall, Women’s Soccer’s Olivia Kqira, and Women’s Golf’s Nicole Lincicome in being honored this week.
The Wheeling University Men’s Golf team returns to action on Monday, September 30th, when they compete at the one-day Waynesburg Invitational.
