It’s the Bobcats’ first shutout defeat since last year’s 45-0 loss at home to Newton.

Unofficially, the Bobcats were outgained 440-27 in total offense by the host Cardinals (3-1), who celebrated Homecoming with a whirlwind first half. Newton scored four of five touchdowns from 48 yards away or farther, including a 66-yard scamper to the end zone by Reilly Trease on the second play of the game.

Newton quarterback Caden Klein finished 2-for-4 for 128 yards with touchdown passes of 80 yards to Cade Bauer and 48 yards to Finn Martin within a span of 2 minutes, 39 seconds, in the second quarter. Sandwiched in between was a safety, when the Cardinals caught up to Marshalltown punter Johan Gomez in the end zone after a low snap.

Klein added an 8-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and Isaiah Hansen got a 57-yard dash to paydirt to cap Newton’s scoring in the second.

Hansen finished with 10 carries for 107 yards for the Cardinals, who averaged 12.9 yards per play offensively.

The Bobcat defense managed to resist thanks to three forced turnovers. Jamison Niehouse intercepted a pass, while Mochamad Pramana forced and recovered a fumble, and Lincoln Barker fell on a fumble forced by Jonathan Schaeffer.

Marshalltown was led by sophomore running back Tyler Englund, who carried 15 times for 38 yards. Englund had a 50-yard touchdown run called back on a holding penalty in the fourth quarter, sending the Bobcats to their first shutout of the season. Ethan Gorsuch added 13 yards on two carries and Davis Ragland had 12 yards on five carries.

MHS quarterback Jacob Hayes was sacked five times and managed to get off just two passes, completing one for four yards to Zane Moore.

“I think the jist of tonight is I did a poor job of prepping us from a mental standpoint,” said MHS head coach Adam Goodvin. “I think we had way too many errors organizationally with guys not on the field when they should be, so I’ve gotta be better.”

Marshalltown returns to Leonard Cole Field for consecutive home games starting with a Sept. 27 showdown with Ottumwa. The Bobcats will honor its Class 4A state football finalist team of 2009 with a pre-game recognition ceremony.
