ISHPEMING TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WLUC) – Cancer Care of Marquette County has been dedicated to helping cancer patients since 1958 and the organization is gearing up for a fundraiser Friday evening.
Cancer Care of Marquette County invites residents to a shopping party at Christ the King Lutheran Church.
David Poirier, president of Cancer Care of Marquette County and patient care coordinator, says parishioners at Christ the King Church started the event.
“I think it’s the time of the season. People are looking to get out and spread some goodness,” Poirier said. “There’s going to be some quality products here, the money is going to be going to a great cause, so they can also come get some gifts for themselves, or friends, family, and you know the money is going to go to local cancer patients.”
There will be 12 different kinds of soup and about a dozen vendors offering a range of goods for people to buy.
Cancer Care of Marquette County offers patient services and financial assistance for people diagnosed with cancer, in the hopes they will not have to face the disease alone.
“Anything like this really helps us help those patients and families,” Poirier said.
Cancer survivor Cindy Warner has received help from the care clinic during her treatment for multiple different kinds of cancer. She sells cards at the door of the event, which she says is a small way to give back to the organization that helped her so much.
“Oh, it means a lot to me to be able to do that and to have something that I can give back,” Warner said. “I feel blessed that I’m able to do it, that I’m alive and I’ve come this far and am able to be here and help out.”
The event runs from 6 to 9 p.m. at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Ishpeming Township.
Poirier says they just ask for a donation for soup.
