Five hunters met violent deaths yesterday as deer season opened in northern Minnesota and Wisconsin. The deaths include an 18-year-old Duluth man accidentally shot while hunting on Spirit Island in the St. Louis River. Meanwhile, Carlton County authorities are searching for a man reported lost in the Holyoke area.

This year’s firearms deer season will be one of the most successful on record, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources officials said. Using preliminary data, the 2004 harvest is down about 8% compared with 2003, the highest harvest on record. It may exceed 2002, when 197,000 deer were registered.
