With all due respect to Tiger, Rory, Nelly and their peers, professional golf is not the best part of the game.
Golf’s greatest appeal lies in the places that it takes us, the memories we make and the people we meet along the way.
Golf, that is, as most of us enjoy it, whether at our local muni or a bucket-list course in a far-flung locale. That’s the game we’ll celebrate on Destination GOLF, a new bi-monthly podcast from GOLF.com that is now available wherever you get your pods: APPLE | SPOTIFY | IHEART | AMAZON. (For a preview clip, check out the video in this article.)
My co-host, Simon Holt, and I cumulatively have more than six decades of experience hopscotching the globe to take in courses — and the areas around them — on every continent where the game is played. Pine Valley? Pebble Beach? The Old Course? Augusta? Been there, bogied them. Just as we have with lesser-known courses from Australia to Argentina, Cuba to North Korea, Long Island to Los Angeles, South Africa to Sweden and beyond.
Simon, who runs 8AM Travel, is from Scotland, where he cut his teeth on some of the world’s most fabled links. I grew up in Brookline, Mass., and got my first glimpse of a famous course by sneaking onto The Country Club. But both of us are happy to play golf anywhere, and especially pleased when we manage to break 80.
Like our drives, our conversations will stray in all directions, but we promise to end up in interesting places. We’ll be talking, of course, a lot about courses. The ones we’ve played and the ones we dream of playing. And offering suggestions not only for where you might consider going but also how to get there, what to eat and other things to do and see when you arrive.
Coolest clubhouses. Best cocktails. Quirkiest customs. Craziest practice ranges. We’ve got you covered. We’ll be interviewing guests. We’ll be taking your questions. No topic is too big or small, too foreign or familiar.
Our goal is to channel the spirit of the lively clubhouse banter in which you engage with your friends after a round — fleshed out with the expertise and insights from our long years in the game.
In Destination GOLF‘s debut episode (links below), we’ll give you a sneak peek at GOLF’s latest Top 100 Courses in the U.S. list, which won’t hit GOLF.com until later this week. Please join us for that conversation — and wherever our travels take us from there.
