A film highlighting the loss of life from fatal road traffic collisions has premiered to thousands during a football match.

The one-minute video shown at Ashton Gate stadium in Bristol focused on the five most common causes of fatal crashes.

According to Avon and Somerset Police, who commissioned the film, drink and drug driving, speeding, using a phone, not wearing a seat belt and careless driving are the ‘Fatal Five’ reasons for most collisions.

Chief Inspector Robert Cheeseman said: “Poor driving behaviour is the root cause of the majority of collisions.”

“These fatalities and injuries are preventable. The choices we make behind the wheel really do matter,” he added.

Figures from Avon and Somerset police show that since 2023, 121 road users in the force area have died in road traffic collisions, which means that, on average, one journey made every week across Avon and Somerset ends in tragic circumstances.

Police say the vast majority involved one of the ‘Fatal Five’ common causes.

The short film was premiered at the Bristol City home game against Stoke on Wednesday evening. It will also be shown to cinema audiences at Scott Cinema Bridgwater from 14 February.

The film has been paid for by the Avon and Somerset Road Safety Fund, which is funded by fines from traffic offences.
