ANN ARBOR, MI — It’s been over 50 years since Ann Arbor’s Briarwood Mall arrived on the scene in the 1970s and it’s still a major regional shopping destination.

The mall property is starting to undergo a transformation with a mixed-use redevelopment of the former Sears area and city leaders hope to see even more development there.

Macy’s, Von Maur and JCPenney still anchor the mall, which boasts dozens of shops from Urban Outfitters to the Apple store, as well as over a dozen eateries.

From Michigan-made gifts to Japanese comics, here are some of the specialty shops you can find inside Briarwood Mall.

Inspire Marketplace is described as a community of artists, makers and entrepreneurs brought to the public in a mall setting. It advertises itself as a made-in-Michigan gift shop, selling clothing, jewelry and more, including Detroit Lions products.

It’s in the Macy’s wing across from Foot Locker and Claire’s.

Store hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Earthbound Trading Co. is a gift and fashion retailer for “hippies at heart,” offering a selection of crystals and meditation essentials, as well as clothing and accessories to build “your ultimate bohemian wardrobe.” It also sells home decor, textiles, stones, jewelry and more.

“Started in 1994 by Steve and Suzana Gordon as a humble rock and mineral shop, Earthbound Trading Company prides itself on being a place where customers can feel grounded and be who they truly are,” the mall website states.

It’s in the Von Maur wing.

Store hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Manga Spot advertises itself as the place for the best manga, manhwa, light novels and more.

For the uninitiated, manga are Japanese comic books or graphic novels, and manhwa are Korean.

The store is in the Von Maur wing, next to Aeropostale and across from Bath and Body Works.

Store hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Hot Topic has long been a go-to spot for pop culture-inspired fashion and accessories.

The store with the goth/punk vibe and “everything about the music” tagline sells everything from rock band T-shirts to Funko figures, plushies, keychains, posters and more, with occasional in-store events and artist appearances.

It’s next to the Chipotle Mexican Grill and California Pizza Kitchen in the restaurant area of the mall.

Store hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.

If you’re looking for arcade games and amusement, FunShop has you covered.

The rules posted outside include have fun, smile, laugh, play games and win stuff.

In addition to a Jurassic Park game and other adventures, you can even see how you measure up against Bigfoot.

It’s in the Macy’s wing between the Lush cosmetics shop and the Diamond Factory.
