Breeders’ Cup First Look: 5 juvenile races day 1 at Del Mar
Day 1 of Breeders’ Cup 2024 at Del Mar, is two weeks away, and the last five races on the card feature some of the best juveniles in the world.
Here are the possible entries as listed on the Breeders’ Cup website Thursday afternoon.
Pre-entries for all Breeders’ Cup races will be announced Wednesday at noon EDT, and the draw will be held the Monday before the races at 7 p.m. EDT.
Race 6, Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint, 5 furlongs
Governor Sam is on a four-race win streak for George Weaver after leading at every call win by a neck last out in the listed Indian Summer at Keeneland. Todd Pletcher’s Mentee and maiden winner Gate to Wire finished 1-2 last out in the Futurity (G3), but the trainer is leaning toward the Juvenile Turf with Mentee. Shareholder earned a berth by winning the Norfolk Stakes (G2) at Royal Ascot, but then he was ninth last out in the Prix Morny (G1) on Aug. 18 and hasn’t had a start since.

East Avenue is 2-for-2 and led gate to wire last out in beating Ferocious by 5 1/4 lengths in the Breeders’ Futurity (G1). Minaret Station broke his maiden at Horseshoe Indianapolis then upset the Bourbon (G2) at 38-1. Mentee bounced back from a sixth-place finish in the Hopeful to win the Futurity.
