Contract negotiations between the San Francisco 49ers and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk have not yet “intensified,” according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

“The situation has gotten really sticky,” Fowler wrote Saturday. “The receiver market ballooning into the $30 million neighborhood has complicated talks. The 49ers have not shown a willingness to pay Aiyuk what he thinks he’s worth, and negotiations hadn’t intensified lately, last I had checked.”

Aiyuk is not participating in 49ers training camp practices amid his hold-in for an extension. He is currently signed for the 2024 season on a $14.12 million club option.

That number ranks Aiyuk 17th among all wide receiver salaries for the 2024 season.

After two seasons with more than 1,000 receiving yards, including a career-high 1,342 in 2023, Aiyuk is reportedly looking to receive something close to the $28 million AAV Amon-Ra St. Brown is set to earn with the Detroit Lions.

Aiyuk’s contract isn’t the only one the 49ers need to iron out during training camp. The team also has a decision to make regarding left tackle Trent Williams, who, unlike Aiyuk, has not been attending practices at all amid his own contract holdout. Williams has three years remaining on his deal but is seeking a restructured contract.

Williams’ holdout could give the 49ers incentive to listen to trade offers for Aiyuk, Fowler noted.

The 49ers have already committed at least $15 million per year to George Kittle, Christian McCaffrey, Fred Warner, Javon Hargrave, Williams and Deebo Samuel, with Nick Bosa’s contract taking the largest cap hit at $34 million per year.

San Francisco also has to consider the upcoming deal for quarterback Brock Purdy, who will be eligible to sign an extension in 2025. By that time the salary cap will be even higher, raising the possibility that Purdy’s deal could set a new record for quarterbacks.

With that deal coming up in the near future, the 49ers front office “understands that a thoughtful reset of its salary cap will be necessary at some point,” according to Fowler.

That could be keeping San Francisco leadership from matching Aiyuk’s salary requests despite the fact that the wide receiver’s hold-in looks set to continue into the second week of training camp.
