BOZEMAN, Mont. — While many Americans make New Year’s resolutions, it can often be a challenge to stick to them.
Per data from Pew Research, three out of ten Americans made at least one New Year’s resolution in 2024, with the most common resolutions pertaining to health and fitness goals.
Many gyms see an uptick in traffic during the first month of the year, as people set out to fulfill those resolutions. According to the Baylor College of Medicine, 88% of people who make resolutions give up on them approximately two weeks after they set them.
To stick to your resolutions and make them part of your routine throughout January and beyond, Eli Kesselheim, general manager of the Mountain Project, a local gym in Bozeman, says consistency is key.
“If you can stick to one thing for 90 days, they say that becomes a part of your routine,” said Kesselheim. “And the more dedicated you can be to staying consistent, the quicker it’ll be your routine, and the longer it’ll last.”
He says another trick to sticking to those resolutions is having an external goal, something he sees a lot in some of the gym’s most dedicated clientele. Those goals could be things like training for a race or improving your fitness level for sports such as skiing or mountain biking.
“We’re a gym for non-gym people. We like to just create a base and be used more as an addition to your outdoor activities and just kind of help you grow,” said Kesslheim. “Most of our clientele aren’t coming to the gym just to look good.”
Whatever the goal, he says, the more specific you can be, the better.
