Sam Uutala led Barrington to the Class 3A boys golf regional title Wednesday at Makray Memorial Golf Club in Barrington.
Uutala carded a two-under 69 to become the only golfer at the regional to break par.
His score helped Barrington to the regional title with a score of 307. He got help from Drew Schauenberg (75), William Lange (75) and Isaiah Thomas (83) as the Broncos head to the Jacobs sectional Monday at Randall Oaks Golf Club.
It was the Broncos’ first regional title in two years. It also helped Barrington bounce back from last week’s Mid-Suburban League championship where the Broncos finished second.
“I was really proud of the kids,” Barrington coach Bryan Tucker. “It really speaks to their character after how we finished last week. It was deceptively windy and tough conditions out there today.”
Prospect, which was fourth at the MSL tournament, finished second with a 325. The Knights were paced by Cole Bielecki and Matthew Mundt, who each shot 80. Luke Ginsberg (81) and Andrew Sawadski (84) also scored well.
Fremd, which was the MSL champion, didn’t play as well on Wednesday. Still, the Vikings were able to qualify for the Jacobs sectional by finishing third with 327. Fremd was led by Rayden Tee (79), Preston Cheng (80), Brighton Mao (83) and Jack Bell (87).
Hersey was fourth with a 329. The Huskies did advance Kyle Carlson, Owen Spokas, Danny Dicola and Heny Esposito.
Palatine was fifth with a 336. Kasey May, who was second overall with a 73, and Bryson Landerman paced the Pirates and both qualified as at-large golfers.
Stevenson was sixth with a 339. The Patriots had both Trenton Kurtz and Jeremy Chambers qualify for sectionals.
Also qualifying at-large was Buffalo Grove’s Cori Lee and Lake Zurich’s Tyler Marini.
At Warren: Libertyville won their first regional title since 2003. The Wildcats scored a 313 to finish 5 strokes better than Lake Forest.
Ryan Hahn led the Wildcats with a 75, tying Lake Forest’s Michale Hahn for medalist honors. Hahn won the title on a tiebreaker.
Parker Johnson and Quincy Adams each carded a 79 for Libertyville while Finn Sullivan posted an 80 as the Wildcats are headed to the Jacobs sectional at Randall Oaks.
Vernon Hills was third with a 327. The Cougars were led by Henrik Lundberg (79), Lundaa Hayanhivaa (80) and Conor Fayard (82) while Jack Levitan and Brendan Handoko each scored an 86.
Warren, which was fourth with a 334, advanced Cameron Simmons, Evan Villarreal and Jameson O’Neal. Mundelein, which was seventh, advanced Dylan Trahan and Ryan Phelan.
At Elk Grove: Playing at Fox Run, Conant finished third to qualify for the sectionals. The Cougars scored a 316 to finish behind Lyons’ 299 and York’s 316.
Conant was led by Antonio Gutierrez who had a 77. Peyton Kittivat scored a 78, Ahilan Nayani a 79 and Joshua Lee an 82.
Hoffman Estates’ Jayden Lim. Rolling Meadows’ Nico Haber, Richie Peters and Connor Towle, and Schaumburg’s Brody Hinkle all qualified as at-large golfers.
At Maine South: Playing at Wilmette Golf Club, Maine South finished fourth with 320 and failed to qualify as a team. The Hawks did send four individuals to the sectionals: Jack Zone, Chistopher Clark, Adam Drabek and Charlies Francis.
Maine West will be sending Robert Young, Logan Amar and Tommy Kulesza. Maine East’s Jiro Yamat scored 75 to finish tied for seventh and qualify. Leyden had a pair of at-large qualifiers in Nicholas Swiontek and Antonio Petrucci.
At Harlem: Grant finished eighth at Atwood Homestead Golf Course. Eros Rabor finished second overall with a 76 and qualified for sectionals.
At Carmel: In 2A, Carmel won at Deer Run Golf Club by two strokes. The Corsairs scored a 320 to edge Prairie Ridge, which finished with a 322.
Carmel was led by Peter Kosobucki, who led the Corsairs with a 78. Ryan Denapoli had a 79, while Josh Braus brought in an 80 and JJ Lee scored an 83.
Grayslake Central was third with a 330 to finish just in front of Lakes which had a 331. Ian McGowan and Jack Mudd each had 82s for Grayslake Central while Derek Caldwell and Cody Grabnik each had 83s.
Lakes’ Brady Cross was the medalist with a 76. He will be joined as an at-large golfer by teammates Henry Samulak and Corey Anderson.
Antioch qualified Michael Titus, Benjamin Clausen and Rylan Frazier. Grayslake North’s Ryan Porter and Wauconda’s Lucas Swanson also qualified.
At Montini: Also, in 2A, St. Viator finished second at the Village Links of Glen Ellyn. The Lions shot 319 to finish behind Wheaton Academy, who carded a 298. Both teams qualified for the Kaneland sectional next Monday. Ryan Kalaway shot a 77 to lead St. Viator and finish third overall. Joe Lang (78), Mac Dean (79) and Zak Roesch (85) were the top scorers for the Lions.
