BORGER, Texas (KFDA) – Borger’s planned $100 million sports complex moved one step closer to reality as the city approved the scope of work for the pre-construction phase.
The Borger City Council approved the economic development corporation’s payment of $100,000 to 8:28 Sports Development Group.
The design phase has been completed and 8:28 Sports Development’s architect gave a presentation at today’s meeting which included the addition of a grocery store, apartments and condos.
“Today they don’t just have to just hear us talk anymore, they were able to see a visual presentation of what this actually can look like once it’s completed. I think everyone’s excited about that, we’re excited about that and it seems that everybody was kind of pleased with what they’ve seen,” said Jeff Williams Sr., head of design and development at 8:28 Sports Development Group. “So we’re just excited we’re moving forward to the next phase, which will be our pre-construction phase.”
The original concept had indoor and outdoor courts, a water park, meeting spaces, a hotel and restaurants.
The design shown at today’s meeting will add more benefits to Borger by providing new spaces for local businesses in the complex.
“There will be lots of opportunities for our local industries and companies to become part of the complex. It’s also going to be made available for residents to enjoy the complex, as well as the entire Panhandle region,” said Amy Fesser, executive director for Borger Economic Development Corporation.
Previously, the entire project was set to cost $100 million for the Boomtown Multidome Sports Complex but that cost is now only for phase one.
“Everything right now is basically, you know, self-funded through myself and my company and then also the installments. We’re working hard to, you know, cultivate other opportunities. Which we have investors lined up for something of this magnitude,” said DeAngelo Simmons, CEO of 8:28 Sports Development Group.
Officials say the majority of this project is going to be funded by private sponsors and investors.
With the expansion of the original plan, the project is now set to have five phases.
Officials say they are hoping to break ground later next year.
