CLEVELAND, Ohio – Fitness fans now have the opportunity to have tailor made workouts designed for them by the latest technology.
The YMCA of Greater Cleveland has launched its Egym program at its French Creek branch in Avon and more than 700 people have already taken advantage of the new system.
District Executive Director Joe Cerny said 79 percent of New Year resolutions are about health and wellness and the Egym is the ideal platform to help achieve those goals.
He said: “The Egym offers a full-body circuit workout that guides users’ rep-by-rep through each exercise. With interactive video screens and personalized tracking, the Egym is perfect for everyone, from beginners to seasoned gym-veterans.”
“It is a smart fitness program which is exciting, it is completely tailored and customized to the user as an individual. It takes biometric readings the first time someone uses it and then automatically adjusts to your strength settings, your height settings and your range of motion. Never again do you have to guess if you are in the right position or have the right weight or motion, it is all done for you.”
And the system is gamified to make it more fun for users while ensuring they get the most out of the experience. Cerny said: “Often people will come to work out and quickly go through the steps but not necessarily get maximum benefits of their workout.”
“But the gamification means you are working our properly every time. It is a lot like ‘Pac Man’ as you are trying to collect coins as you go through at the right pace to maximize your workout performance for your mind and body.”
Cerny said the Greater Cleveland YMCA is one of the first in the country to install the Egym system and it has proved so popular that plans to roll it out to other Cleveland branches are being considered.
“It has been an incredible investment not only for the YMCA but for the community. We are getting the first sets of data back. Egym does something called bio age, where it calculates your body’s age by physical condition rather than your calendar age. I am 45 but initially my bio age was 47, I had a low cardio score and my weight was not where I wanted it to be, but over the two months we have had the Egym, members have had reductions in their bio age of seven to nine years as they have increased their performance.”
He said participants’ strength has increased by an average of 16 percent which he attributes to people staying focused on their goals in the Egym.
Users can choose from eight programs and four training methods that adjust speed, weight load and repetitions to suit individual goals, and the Egym also provides users with video education to show how certain workouts are targeting specific muscles and bettering health.
Cerny said the system is compatible with most third-party smart devices and wearable technology. “Our current circuit is 11 machines and in addition to those are more than 40 pieces of cardio equipment, all synched with Egym to promote your exercise.”
He added anyone interested in trying the Egym for themselves just needs a YMCA membership and they will be given a 30-minute orientation and training to use the system.
“The beauty of the system is it is easy, it is simple, it is fun and it is smart as it grows with you. No matter how complex it is in the background it is easy for the user.”
