The BCCI’s recent guidelines for the Indian team sought to reportedly improve the team’s discipline following a string of poor results have been among the hot topics of discussion recently.

Among the guidelines are also the rules for players not to travel with their families and having to play domestic cricket, to keep their spot in the national team.

What did Sanjay Manjrekar say about Indian cricket and Bollywood culture?

While speaking with ESPNcricinfo on Friday following BCCI’s guideline announcements, Manjrekar reminded about the Indian cricket culture back in his playing days and compared it to what has been happening recently.

“It was nice to read [the guidelines]. There has to be a basic norm [in the team]. We spent our entire career sharing hotel rooms while families only travelled for the last couple of weeks on a long tour. Travelling separately and all that…Tendulkar was a huge star but I don’t think he ever had a personal bodyguard with the team. When you are with the team then there is enough security with you,” he said.

“That culture has seeped into the Indian team and it is similar to what we see in mainstream Bollywood. I wish after this, Indian cricket remains what it is. On personal trips, these players can have their own lifestyles but when travelling with the team, some rules have to be respected.”

He also spoke about players coming to the nets individually and leaving after their stint,

“During our times it wasn’t like this. How did it reach this stage? I feel players are not to be blamed here. The managers and people in charge should be held responsible. It is easy to blame the players, coaches and selectors. Go after the people who are in charge,” he concluded.
