Veteran center Boban Marjanović agreed to a deal with Turkish team Fenerbahçe, according to NBA insider Marc Stein.
Stein reported the contract includes a clause that would allow Marjanović to leave and sign with an NBA team in December if an opportunity presents itself.
The European basketball season runs concurrently with the NBA’s, so the timing of the opt-out clause could work in Marjanović’s favor and be a detriment to his new team. A return to the Association might be more likely if the 36-year-old is playing regularly for Fenerbahçe, which could then find itself in need of a new big man on the fly.
For now, going overseas seemingly points to a lack of NBA interest in Marjanović. He appeared in just 45 games with the Houston Rockets over the last two years with the Houston Rockets, averaging 3.3 points, 2.0 rebounds and 0.1 blocks.
The Serbian has long turned heads thanks to his 7’4″ frame, and his size has presented obvious advantages on the court.
Marjanović has struggled to overcome his limitations, though, and that prevented him from becoming a regular contributor at any of his six stops across a nine-year career so far. He can’t space the floor on offense and he has a big target on his back as a defender to exploit in the pick-and-roll.
Even though he’s leaving a door open for the NBA, he may have logged his last appearance in the league.
