After suffering a neck injury during Saturday’s preseason game against the Bears, backup QB Shane Buechele was placed on IR.
In response to the quarterback injury, the Bills signed QB Ben DiNucci. DiNucci will have some catching up to do with the offense in order to play against Pittsburgh on Saturday, but Brady is confident with their QB room that they’ll be able to catch him up.
“Fortunately, we got a lot of guys in the QB room, a lot of coaches with familiarity with the systems that he’s been around,” OC Joe Brady said. “I might be calling a play in our terminology and calling it in the terminology that he’s been a part of. We’ll find a way to [say] ‘hey, these are the plays you’ll have’ just to be able to go out there and execute, to let him play his best football.”
DiNucci last played in an NFL regular season game in 2020 for the Dallas Cowboys and spent the 2023 season on the Denver Broncos practice squad. DiNucci also played in the XFL for the Seattle Sea Dragons in the 2023 season.
“The fact that I’m able to come out here, I was golfing Sunday morning, and then all of a sudden, Bills call me and I’m here, you know, 24 hours later,” DiNucci said. “So, very appreciative, very grateful. I don’t take this lightly, right? There’s three guys on every team right now. So there’s 96 guys in the world who get to say this is their job. So I’m really excited for myself, to go show other guys what I can do.”
Although DiNucci was not familiar with the Bills team as a whole, several of his past teammates have welcomed him, and the quarterback room has helped him try to get up to speed.
“Josh has been extremely helpful already,” DiNucci said. “Mitch, Shane, all these guys have been really helpful in trying to get me up to speed as quick as possible. So big, big help to from those guys.”
In addition to Buechele’s placement on IR, WR Chase Claypool was also placed on IR. Claypool had promising practices during the spring but had a toe injury that has sidelined him since late July. The Bills also waived/injured WR Bryan Thompson.
QB Mitch Trubisky returned to practice on Tuesday, after missing Monday’s practice due to an excused personal absence.
In response to the injuries that have occurred, other than DiNucci, the Bills signed WR Damiere Byrd and WR Deon Cain.
“This league is all about opportunity and being able to get film during the preseason. So being able to just have another year to try to make something happen, means a lot,” Byrd said.
