WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – Scammers are on the hunt for their next opportunity to take advantage and steal your money, and the Better Business Bureau is sharing a warning about holiday scams.
The BBB said online shopping scams are up 125 percent compared to last year, and that number will likely increase with Black Friday and Cyber Monday on the horizon.
These scams aren’t targeting a specific age range or demographic — anyone can be a victim.
Some of the red flags of online scammers involve the price tags. If you see a deal that seems too good to be true, look at the contact information and online reviews of the websites you’re shopping on. Established retailers will have verified results on that front.
Social media is becoming a hotbed for online scams, and Facebook is the top platform on which people can become victims. If you find something interesting on social media, find the secure website to make sure that the company is real.
Denise Groene of the BBB said you shouldn’t trust a social media ad without doing your homework.
“These scammers are paying to put a sponsored ad in front of you, knowing you’re likely going to click, go to their website, and make a purchase,” Groene said. “Be very cautious as to what you’re clicking on when you’re scrolling through your feed.”
Scammers will also pose as shipping providers, claiming there is an issue with your order. This often comes via email or text. Always make sure to use your shipping provider’s app or call them directly to check your shipping status.
