INDIANAPOLIS — Bennedict Mathurin scored 38 points, Tyrese Haliburton had 35 points and 14 assists and the short-handed Pacers stunned the Knicks 132-121 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Sunday evening.
The Pacers improved to 5-5. The Knicks fell to 4-5.
Myles Turner added 26 points and Pascal Siakam added 14. Jalen Brunson led the Knicks with 33 points. Karl Anthony Towns had 30. Former IU star O.G. Anunoby added 25.
The Pacers’ fourth quarter was one of their best of the season as they finished with 40 points on 14 of 22 shooting including 8 of 13 from 3 and 4 of 5 at the line. The Pacers posted 1.59 points per possession in the fourth.
Tyrese Haliburton hit a 3 from 25 feet out and the Pacers are up 10. Haliburton has 31 points and 12 assists in what is probably his best offensive effort of the season. He just teed up Ben Sheppard for a critical corner 3 as well.
Myles Turner just drilled back-to-back 3-pointers. He’s got 23 points. Tyrese Haliburton just dished out a pair of assists and he has 11 to go with 28 points. Bennedict Mathurin is up to 33 points. Pascal Siakam had 14. The players the Pacers needed to carry them through all their injuries have done so tonight. The Pacers are 8 of 11 from the floor and 4 of 5 from 3 in the fourth.
Pascal Siakam just hit a 3 to tie this one after a T.J. McConnell bucket, and then that 3 turned out to give the Pacers the lead because O.G. Anunoby’s 3-pointer earlier in the frame was waved off on video review because he stepped on the sideline. Big break for the Pacers there.
Bunch of fouls down the stretch on both sides and the Pacers hung in there with those. They were 12 of 14 from the line in the third while the Knicks were 11 of 12. The Pacers posted 1.30 points per possession the third while the Knicks were at 1.20.
As has tended to be the case, the Pacers let the Knicks get rolling right as the Pacers were starting to get some momentum. 6-0 run here puts the Knicks back up.
Jarace Walker just drilled back-to-back 3-pointers to get the Pacers the lead back and they’re on an 18-6 run overall. The Pacers are 8 of 12 from the floor, 4 of 6 from 3 this quarter and posting 1.46 points per possession.
The Pacers came out going shot-for-shot with the Knicks and the game was tied at 65 with 9:52 in the third, but the Knicks are on a 10-0 run. The Knicks are 6 of this quarter. The Pacers are 2 of 6.
Bennedict Mathurin and Tyrese Haliburton are helping the Pacers gain some momentum, but the Knicks continue to have answers because the Pacers don’t have great matchups for their stars. A deep jumper by O.G. Anunoby and a 3-pointer by Jalen Brunson give the Knicks a 3-point lead at the break.
At the half, the Pacers are shooting 22 of 49 from the floor, 9 of 23 from 3, 5 of 6 at the line with 1.10 points per possession The Knicks are 25 of 44, 6 of 15 from 3, 5 of 7 with 1.19 points per possession. Bennedict Mathurin has 21 points on 7 of 9 shooting including 5 of 6 from 3-point range. Tyrese Haliburton has 14 on 5 of 8 shooting including 3 of 5 from 3. Anunoby leads the Knicks has 19 on 7 of 10 shooting, Brunson has 15 on 6 of 8 shooting, Towns has 11.
The Pacers got scoring flurries from both Bennedict Mathurin and Tyrese Haliburton in that sequence. Both are 3 of 3 from the floor with two 3-pointers this quarter. Mathurin has 10 points in the period for 21 so far in the game. Haliburton has eight points and 13 for the afternoon.
The Pacers are struggling to keep the offense going, making just 2 of their first 8 shots this period. Knicks, meanwhile are 5 of 10 and 3 of 6 from the field. Starting to show how deep the Pacers are digging into their bench.
The last 3:57 of the first was when the Pacers had to dig deep into their bench with Nembhard, Nesmith and Toppin all out. Rookie Johnny Furphy and two-way contract players Quenton Jackson and Enrique Freeman all made appearances as did T.J. McConnell and Jarace Walker. Only McConnell scored out of that group, but the Pacers still outscored the Knicks 7-3 in that stretch. At the end of the first, the Pacers are 12 of 28 from the floor, 5 of 12 from 3 and have 1.07 points per possession. The Knicks are 11 of 21, 1 of 5, 3 of 4 at the line with 1.01 points per possession.
The Pacers’ momentum vanished almost as quickly as it appeared. The Knicks took the lead back with a 6-0 run and the three buckets came on easy layups by Miles McBride, Jalen Brunson and O.G. Anunoby.
The Pacers are on an 11-2 run and starting to get the offense ignited. Tyrese Haliburton is showing some juice out there. He hit a 3 and he’s got five assists already pushing the ball ahead. Bennedict Mathurin has eight points already on 3 of 4 shooting including 2 of 3 from 3-point range and Haliburton just teed him up for one.
With Nesmith and Nembhard out, matching up with the Knicks’ starting five on the defensive end is not easy at all. Ben Sheppard has Jalen Brunson, Bennedict Mathurin’s on Mikal Bridges, Tyrese Haliburton has to guard Josh Hart. Pascal Siakam is on O.G. Anunoby and Myles Turner is on Karl Anthony Towns. And it’s about to get harder off the bench.
The Knicks are 6 of 9 from the floor so far. All five starters have at least one bucket. The Pacers are 5 of 9, but the Knicks are at 1.45 points per possession.
Pacers lineup is the same as it was Friday with Andrew Nembhard and Aaron Nesmith out.

PF — Pascal Siakam
C — Myles Turner
Knicks

In his pre-game press conference, Rick Carlisle said Aaron Nesmith is out until at least December, Andrew Nembhard is out for approximately two weeks and Obi Toppin is also out for Sunday’s game.
T.J. McConnell is available after being listed as questionable and missing Friday’s game with an illness.
Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau said guard Cameron Payne is out. Miles McBride is a game-time decision.
Pacers forward Aaron Nesmith is out for a fourth straight game with a sprained left ankle. Point guards T.J. McConnell (illness) and guard Andrew Nembhard (knee soreness) were listed as questionable after missing Friday’s game in Charlotte. Forward Obi Toppin (left ankle sprain) was also questionable.
Centers Isaiah Jackson and James Wiseman are out long-term with torn Achilles tendons.
For the Knicks, forward Precious Achiuwa (strained left hamstring) and center Mitchell Robinson (left ankle surgery) are out and have not yet played this season. Reserve guards Miles McBride (illness) and Cameron Payne (strained left hamstring) are questionable.
5 p.m. ET Sunday, Nov. 10, 2024, at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Nat Newell: Knicks 111-89
The injury-ravaged Pacers are not in great position to face the Knicks’ collection of frontline wings of Brunson, Bridges, OG Anunoby and Josh Hart. Indiana’s advantage — depth — is likely depleted with Aaron Newsmith out and T.J. McConnell, Obi Toppin and Andrew Nembhard questionable. Unless Tyrese Haliburton (14.7 ppg, 37.9%, 25.4% 3s, 7.7 apg) suddenly starts playing like an All-NBA player again, the Pacers won’t be able to keep up.
