The incident took place during the live broadcast of the WTA Finals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, when Wertheim, who was appearing on the Tennis Channel via video link, made a comment about Krejcikova’s appearance in an apparent attempt at humor. Unaware that the comment was airing, Wertheim remarked, “What do you think I am? Barbora Krejcikova. Look at the forehead when Krejcikova and [Zheng Qinwen] take the court.” The remark left fans frustrated, with some expressing their disapproval on social media, questioning the lack of professionalism and respect in Wertheim’s statement.

Krejcikova took to social to respond to the comment, posting a strong message on Twitter (now X) that called out the incident. “You might have heard about the recent comments made on Tennis Channel during the WTA Finals coverage that focused on my appearance rather than my performance,” Krejcikova wrote. “As an athlete who has dedicated herself to this sport, it was disappointing to see this type of unprofessional commentary.”

The former World No. 2 acknowledged that this wasn’t the first time she had encountered such remarks in sports media but felt compelled to speak up on this occasion. She continued, “This isn’t the first time something like this is happening in the sports world. I’ve often chosen not to speak up, but I believe it’s time to address the need for respect and professionalism in sports media.”

Krejcikova also voiced concern that these types of remarks take away from the essence of sport, distracting fans from the skill, dedication, and resilience that athletes bring to the court. “These moments distract from the true essence of sport and the dedication all athletes bring to the field,” she stated. “I love tennis deeply, and I want to see it represented in a way that honors the commitment we make to compete at this level.”
