The biggest story from Monday’s play was Djokovic dropping a set to an American wild-card entry.
The No. 7 seed rebounded easily in the second set and went on to win the match with little trouble, but losing the first set of the tournament was a bit of a shock, especially when you compare his result to Alcaraz and Sinner.
Sinner was taken to tiebreaks in the first and second sets of his match with Nicolas Jarry, but he won those sets and then took the third set with ease.
Alcaraz had the easiest time of the three high-profile players, as he only lost seven games across three sets.
Djokovic, Alcaraz and Sinner have combined to win the last 10 men’s tennis majors, but a maximum of two of them will be around for the semifinals. Djokovic and Alcaraz will meet in the quarterfinals if they keep winning.
Americans Frances Tiafoe and Tommy Paul won their first matches of the tournament on Monday. Taylor Fritz, the highest-seeded American at No. 4, plays his first-round match on Tuesday.
