Toomer’s Corner is a place where Auburn fans come to celebrate big wins for their team. Most well-known for the toilet paper flying after football wins, this Saturday was a little different. A huge party on the Plains took place after men’s basketball was able to take down Alabama.
Based on how full the trees were, you would have imagined it was for a football game. Auburn fans flooded the corner to celebrate and since there is a live feed on 24/7, everyone can get a peek of the scene.
Fans were still there even well past the game’s ending, fully taking in the moment. On a historic day for college basketball where the SEC had its first-ever No. 1 vs. No. 2 game, there is not an ending more perfect for Auburn.
You can check out the full scene from Toomer’s Corner here via ABC 33/40’s James Spann.
Celebrations will certainly expand past Toomer’s Corner. Not too far away are some places Auburn students and fans will enjoy themselves throughout the night.
The hope is that this is not the last major Toomer’s Corner roll of the basketball season. Auburn’s goal is to make the Final Four and eventually win the national championship, feeling like they are the best team in the country.
Beating Alabama certainly made their case a lot stronger, if not cemented it.
For the second time in his career, Bruce Pearl won a No. 1 vs. No. 2 game. This time, his Auburn Tigers were the top team in the country, taking down Alabama in Tuscaloosa.
The last time Pearl won one of those matchups, he was the head coach at Tennessee, taking down No. 1 Memphis in 2008. This time around, Auburn took control in the first half, but had to fight off a second-half comeback by Alabama.
The Tigers responded, and they came away with the 94-85 victory. To Pearl, it was the culmination of a week of preparation as Auburn embraced the No. 1 ranking in multiple ways.
“You walk into our locker room, there’s a sign that says, ‘Make History,’” Pearl told ESPN’s Jess Sims after the game. “These kids are never going to forget this 1 vs. 2 matchup. We played great from start to finish. We acted like we were the No. 1 team, we prepared like we were the No. 1 team and we are the No. 1 team in the country.”
