The ATP Finals 2024 edition is being hosted in Turin, Italy for the fourth time and this time around there looks to be no clear favourite for the title. Jannik Sinner is confirmed to end 2024 as the World No. 1 but who ends up No. 2 will depend on this week’s result. We have two former champions in Alexander Zverev and Daniil Medvedev in the field this year and as ever we at LWOT preview and predict both the matches scheduled for Day 2.
Head to head – Rublev 3-6 Zverev
Andrey Rublev is yet into another ATP Finals with a decent 2024 season. He would however love to reach at least the semi-finals to cap off 2024 on a strong note. It seems like he has been lingering in the mid section of top 10 for far too long and it’s time he takes the leap ahead. It didn’t happen in 2024 with a pretty disappointing show at the Grand Slams.
He faces Alexander Zverev who boasts of a fantastic 2024 season with another final appearance at the French Open this year. The German is yet to win a Grand Slam but now the focus shifts to a tournament where has triumphed twice and looks set for another good run here. He has a favourable 603 record against Rublev and there isn’t anything off late to suggest Zverev won’t be able to match and eventually out manoeuver Rublev from the baseline. Expect a strong start from Zverev with a serving masterclass.
Prediction: Zverev in 2
Head to head – Alcaraz 4-0 Ruud
Casper Ruud yet again proved that he is one of the top players on tour but the Norwegian is still a little bit off from being the best. His favourite surface is clay but he has done remarkably well in the past years at this very tournament. Throughout this year, Ruud hasn’t quite shown his best at the top tournaments.
He takes on four time grand slam champion Carlos Alcaraz who has had another brilliant year and would love to add the ATP Finals trophy to his cabinet. Apart from the loss at the finals of Olympics, the Spaniard has not put a foot wrong when he’s reached the back end of the tournaments. Ruud is a decent base liner but his serve looks likely to be attacked by the aggressive Spaniard who will provide him who will provide him no respite from the baseline either.
Prediction: Alcaraz in 2
