India’s Rohan Bopanna and Australia’s Matthew Ebden ended their partnership on a winning note after defeating Germany’s Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz in their final match of the ATP Finals 2024 Bob Bryan Group in Turin, Italy on Friday.
Despite the 7-5, 6(6)-7(8), 10-7 victory, the sixth-seeded Indo-Australian pair exited the season-ending tournament as only the top two tennis teams from the group advanced to the semi-finals.
Bopanna and Ebden, semi-finalists in 2023, had suffered back-to-back losses earlier in the group stage against the top seeds Marcelo Arevalo-Mate Pavic and Simone Bolelli-Andrea Vavassori.
The Australian Open champions started the dead rubber against Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz on the hard courts of the Pala Alpitour on a cautious note. They secured the break of the match in the 11th game of the first set and took a 1-0 lead.
Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz bounced back by winning the second set in the tiebreaker after neither pair could find a break.
Bopanna and Ebden took a three-point lead at 6-3 in the super tiebreaker and held onto their advantage to win the contest in one hour and 42 minutes.
The win made Bopanna, at the age of 44 years and eight months, the oldest tennis player to win a match at the ATP Finals across the singles and doubles categories.
Bopanna and Ebden reached the semi-finals last year but lost to eventual champions Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury. The Indian tennis player made the finals in 2012 and 2015, first with compatriot Mahesh Bhupathi and then with Romania’s Florin Mergea, but lost on both occasions.
Bopanna and Ebden had a successful two-year partnership, during which they won the Australian Open title in 2024 along with the ATP Masters 1000 titles at Indian Wells in 2023 and the Miami Open in 2024.
The Indo-Australian pair also reached the semi-finals of the French Open this year and reached the No. 1 rankings in the doubles.
Rohan Bopanna will team up with Croatia’s 39-year-old Ivan Dodig for the 2025 tennis season.
