A pair of teams claimed No. 1 for the first time in program history in this week’s ASWA high school basketball rankings.
Class 7A Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa girls and Class 2A Providence Christian boys are not only first-timers at No. 1, but the lone new top-ranked teams this week.
Other No. 1 girls teams are Class 6A Park Crossing, Class 5A Scottsboro, Class 4A Trinity, Class 3A Lauderdale County, Class 2A Decatur Heritage, Class 1A Spring Garden and AISA Springwood.
Boys teams remaining atop the rankings are Class 7A Hoover, Class 6A Mountain Brook, Class 5A Ramsay, Class 4A Fairfield, Class 3A Midfield, Class 1A Spring Garden and AISA Valiant Cross.
New to Class 7A this season, unbeaten Hillcrest (25-0) has posted impressive wins, including downing previous No. 1 and four-time defending champion Hoover on Monday. The Patriots have also beaten Class 7A No. 2 Vestavia Hills and No. 4 Bob Jones in addition to Hoover. Other notable wins include Class 6A No. 2 Hazel Green and No. 3 Hartselle and Class 3A No. 1 Trinity.
Providence Christian (21-2) took over the top spot after previous No. 1 Section lost twice last week. Providence Christian’s only losses are to Class 3A No. 2 Montgomery Academy in the season-opener and Class 7A No. 5 Dothan.
Hoover boys, undefeated at 24-0 with a 34 game winning streak dating back to last season, moved up to No. 4 in this week’s MaxPreps Top 100 national rankings while ASWA third-ranked Huntsville is No. 29 and ASWA second-ranked Central-Phenix City is No. 57.
