CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – The highly anticipated rematch between Ashley Ridge and Summerville’s girls basketball teams that was set for the Lower State finals on Saturday is off…for now.
Ashley Ridge has been disqualified from the playoffs after an investigation from the South Carolina High School League determined that the Swamp Foxes used a player that is ineligible.
The school’s principal Brook Matthews said in a message to the families and staff of Ashley Ridge that “I want to assure you that I am currently reviewing all available options, including the possibility of appealing this decision. My priority is to ensure fairness for our student-athletes while upholding the integrity of our athletic program. I will be consulting with district leadership and the appropriate governing bodies before making a final decision.”
Swamp Foxes head coach Jimmy Brown told Live 5 News that he was told of the decision by his principal and athletic director just before the team was set to have practice on Tuesday. He said when he told his team the news they thought he was playing a prank on them.
Ashley Ridge was the top overall seed in the 5A-1 lower state playoffs. After a win in quadruple overtime over Ridge View on Monday, they had a record of 26-1 which included 26 wins in a row.
Multiple messages to members of the SCHSL have not been returned.
There’s no word on what will happen to the Lower State finals game if Ashley Ridge is knocked out. Possibilities include Ridge View advancing in the Swamp Foxes place and facing Summerville or the Green Wave could be given a bye into the state championship game.
If Ashley Ridge does intend to appeal they would almost certainly have to start the process on Wednesday.
“I understand how difficult this situation is for our players, coaches, and the entire ARHS community.” Matthews said. “I want to take a moment to recognize the dedication, resilience, and achievements of our Women’s Basketball team this season. No matter the outcome, their hard work and sportsmanship deserve to be celebrated.”
