With the five-match Test tour of Australia coming up, there have been a lot of speculation if Arshdeep Singh should be in the touring party. He recently finished with career-best first-class figures of 6/40 in the Duleep Trophy against India B to further strengthen his case.
However, former pacer RP Singh believes Arshdeep should focus on white-ball cricket for now. “Personally, I don’t think there are a lot of different areas when bowling with a red or white bowl. The white ball increases your number of variations, red ball increases your patience,” Singh said in a chat with India Today.
“Arshdeep has skill. He has variations, which, according to my opinion, are for smaller formats. I think there’s still time before he takes the test. I think he needs to tone himself for 1-2 years more and then shift his focus to Test cricket. For the time being, he should focus on white-ball cricket.”
Arshdeep finished with 13 wickets in the Duleep Trophy, and in the recent T20 International (T20I) against Bangladesh, he picked up 3/14 to claim the Player of the Match award. With top players like Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj rested for the series, Arshdeep has been entrusted to lead the bowling attack.
He will be in action again in the second T20I against Bangladesh in Delhi on October 9 (Wednesday).
