Wyatt Worthington II took home the trophy and $25,000 Thursday after winning the Advocates Professional Golf Association tournament at Bally’s Golf Links at Ferry Point, sponsored by Farmers Insurance.
But Worthington wasn’t the only player with something to celebrate, as Chase Johnson set a new record for the Bally’s Golf Links course. The pair were competing alongside many others in a tournament organized by the APGA, which is dedicated to promoting golfers from underrepresented backgrounds to provide them with a platform to “showcase their talents.”
Worthington took home the trophy with 135 strokes after two rounds, just one under golfer Donald Kay. He said he didn’t let a few rough shots get to his head.
“Everything was working a little bit,” Worthington said. “I would say my composure today, due to the fact that I was hitting it all over compared to yesterday. I got off to a rocky start, got some bogeys and it was smooth sailing yesterday, relatively speaking.”
Players, APGA executives, Bally’s staff and sponsors all gathered on the covered patio at Bally’s Golf Links at Ferry Point where Worthington and Johnson were celebrated with a champagne toast and Worthington was awarded his trophy.
Johnson was celebrated for breaking the course record, with 65 strokes on a par 71 course. The previous record was 67 strokes.
The tour week was jam-packed with community and golf events. Players chatted with local Bronx students about the scholarship opportunities and life connections that golf can offer. There was a celebrity Pro-Am round where professionals teamed up with amateurs.
The winners donated prizes—such as sets of Ogio golf bags—to nearby Preston High School, which is starting a golf club for its students. There were two rounds of tournament play, and even a community juniors’ clinic where students from the Bronx and NYC learned fundamental golf swings from the pros.
